Audio in everyday life for children: What the Kids Media Monitor 2025 shows
Almost all children between 4 and 13 years of age regularly access audio media: 88% listen to music, audio plays or audio books at least several times a week.

This means that audio is now part of children's everyday life, far beyond music, and is right behind “watching” films or series and clearly ahead of gaming.

  • Music is the clear leader: 78% listen regularly.
  • Radio plays are particularly popular among younger people. Almost half use it several times a week.
  • At least 37% of audiobooks make it into the weekly routine.

Real podcasts are still a niche in everyday children: 10% listen regularly. Compared to music or audio plays, this is little — but it shows that children can also engage in longer audio formats. Especially in collaboration with parents, who often rate podcasts as reputable and informative, there is a lot of potential for growth here.

Parents particularly appreciate audio! In the eyes of parents, audio media have a clear bonus. They are considered entertaining, child-friendly, understandable and harmless. This makes them perform better than YouTube, social media or many digital games. Audio is also frequently shared: 21% of parents listen “often” and a further 50% listen at least “sometimes.”

Audio is an integral part of children's world and podcasts could continue to catch up here in the next few years. With our story podcasts, we pick up podcast and audio drama enthusiasts and are pioneers in an exciting field: education, entertainment and parent-child time together.
